I start with thinking about how many things that I have to be thankful for in my life, some might call them my blessings. But what happens to me is I get busy and only the bad experiences seem to be meaningful in the course of the day. I see that driver that won’t let me merge, rather than the other five that did let me merge. Then I say” everyone is a jerk, or driving like a jerk”, instead of focusing on the five drivers that helped me today. My question is why do I focus on the bad that is smaller than the good that should occupy my thoughts?
I believe that we are prewired to watch for dangers though experience to keep us alive, such as we should be careful when crossing a street that traffic is spending by, and that is why we see the worst first. But how can we flip the script and see all those great things that we should be thankful first? It is like you are looking for a special car and you don’t see many on the road at first, but then you start to spot your special car everytime you get onto the road. Start looking for those special actions of others and recognize them as items to be grateful for, and spend your time focusing on the good not the bad.
One last tip that worked for me is start of Gratitude Journal that you start noticing things that you are thank for, in the beginning it will hard to come up with five things. But as you grow, when a good thing happens in your life you will be eager to add that to today’s list.
Remember we all have more going right than going wrong, please don’t waste your time on the negative, look at the postive and add it to your list of blessings.
